Gishwati-Mukura National Park

RWANDA DESTINATIONS

Gishwati-Mukura National Park

Gishwati-Mukura National Park, Rwanda’s newest national gem, spans 3,558 hectares in the western districts of Ngororero and Rutsiro. It’s Rwanda’s newest national park, rich in diverse plant life with over 60 tree species like bamboo and hardwoods. Here, you can also find around 84 types of birds fluttering through the canopy. This park’s journey from near extinction due to the impact of the 1994 genocide, to a beacon of conservation, is truly inspiring. With reforestation efforts and strict protections, it’s a living example of nature’s resilience.

  • Wander through trails in Gishwati’s well-preserved forest, home to secretive chimpanzees and cascading waterfalls.
  • Delight in the untouched beauty of Mukura, offering a peek into Rwanda’s natural heritage.
  • Witness the ambitious project connecting these forests with Nyungwe National Park to form a vast conservation corridor.
  • Enjoy the vibrant birdlife and elusive wildlife that thrive in these recovering habitats.

Today, Gishwati-Mukura stands as a proud tribute to Rwanda’s dedication to restoring its natural landscapes, offering visitors on Rwanda Safaris a unique glimpse of Africa’s montane rainforests.

Best Time To Visit

Explore Rwanda’s hidden gem, Gishwati-Mukura, where reforestation meets chimp trekking adventures in its newest national park.

You can visit Gishwati-Mukura National Park all year round, but each season offers a unique experience. If you like hiking, the best time to visit is from June to September. These months bring more sun and drier paths, making your walks through the forest more pleasant. The trails are less muddy then, which means less slipping and more enjoying the beautiful views.

During the wet months from October to May, the park turns into a haven for bird lovers. The rains bring the forest to life with lush scenery and lots of birds to see. Keep in mind that rain can change plans as trails become muddier and walks might be more challenging. But if you don’t mind getting a bit wet, this could be the most beautiful time to explore.

Wildlife

Gishwati-Mukura National Park provides a thrilling opportunity to observe 25 semi-habituated chimpanzees. These chimpanzees are accustomed to trackers, but still cautious of new faces, allowing visitors a unique glimpse into their world. Witnessing these chimps in their natural habitat offers a memorable experience, often in a more intimate setting.

The park also shelters other rare wildlife, including l’Hoest’s and golden monkeys, both special to the Albertine Rift. While exploring, you might spot the elusive side-striped jackal or catch a glimpse of the black-fronted duiker darting through the underbrush. Keep an eye out for the unique Rwenzori three-horned chameleon, as well as other forest dwellers like the Rwenzori sun squirrel and servaline genet.
