When to Climb Kilimanjaro?
Climbing Kilimanjaro is possible year-round, but each season shapes your journey. Dry months from January, March, and June, October bring clearer skies, safer trails, and stunning views. This guide helps you pick the best time for a rewarding Kilimanjaro adventure.
Climbing in January & February to Early March
These months bring some of the most pleasant trekking conditions. Days are mostly dry and sunny, and visibility is excellent. You may still experience occasional showers and even snow at higher altitudes, which makes for stunning photos.
Climbing in March, April & May
Early March can still be favourable, but as the month continues, the long rains begin. Trails become muddy, skies cloudy, and views limited. April and early May are the wettest months, making climbs difficult and less enjoyable.
Climbing in June, July, August & September
This is the peak climbing season. With dry, stable weather and cool evenings, these months are the most popular. July and August are especially busy as they align with European and North American summer holidays. June and September offer the same good conditions but with fewer crowds.
Climbing in October & November
November is the time of the short rains. Showers are lighter than the long rains but still make trails muddy and visibility low. On the bright side, the mountain is tranquil during this time, and northern routes like Rongai experience less rainfall.
December Climbing
December marks the start of another good climbing window. While it can be cooler and sometimes snowy at higher altitudes, conditions are still manageable. Many climbers choose this time for Christmas and New Year climbs.
Important Considerations
Climbing Kilimanjaro is about more than just picking a month. Several factors play into your overall experience:
Special Climbs – Full Moon & New Moon
Climbing Kilimanjaro under a full moon is a magical experience. The summit path glows under moonlight, and you may barely need a headlamp. These dates are popular, so expect more climbers.
Prefer quiet nights and stargazing? Try a new moon climb instead—you’ll get dark skies filled with constellations, perfect for photographers and dreamers alike.
Choosing Your Perfect Time
There is no single “perfect” month to climb Kilimanjaro—it depends on your priorities. If you want clear skies and the best chance of success, choose January–March or June–October. If you prefer quiet trails and don’t mind wet weather, shoulder seasons may suit you better.
Whatever time you choose, climbing Kilimanjaro is always an adventure, and with the proper preparation, it will be one of the most rewarding journeys of your life.
