Discover Tanzania’s Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park offers a genuine African safari experience while saving you time. There are a lot of different kinds of animals in the park that are easy to spot. Because it's so close to Dar, it's an excellent site for those who want to go on a short safari on the weekend. Tourists can't get to 80% of Mikumi, which is southeast of the Tanzam Highway. The 60-km circuit that travelers can use lies on the floodplain of the Mkata River. It is made up of open grassland with acacia trees, borassus palms, and baobab trees here and there.

The grasslands of Mikumi support large herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, and impala. Giraffe and elephant are also common. Predators, such as lions and spotted hyenas, are present, but sightings are less common than in some of the more popular parks. Troops of yellow baboons and vervet monkeys can be found throughout the park.

When To Go

Best Time To Visit Mikumi National Park

You can spot wildlife throughout the year in Mikumi National Park. However, if you want to know the best time to visit, it is from late June to October. This is when Mikumi’s vegetation is thin, and animals gather around waterholes. It makes it easy to spot them together in one place during a game drive. Wildlife viewing becomes more prominent during September and October. This is when large herds of animals come to drink from the last remaining sources of water. If you’re arriving in Mikumi for birding safaris, consider visiting between November and February.

It is easier to view wildlife as the vegetation thins out and animals congregate around water sources. Humidity is lower with plentiful sunshine and little rainfall.

Wet Season

November to May

With its lush green scenery, this is the ideal time for birding safaris. Lots of migratory birds can be seen. Prices of accommodations are lower.
