Umbwe Route

Umbwe Route Extreme Challenge

Tough Yet Thrilling

The Umbwe Route is rarely climbed and provides a straightforward route up the southern aspect of Africa's highest mountain. Due to the topography and the faster rate at which altitude is gained, it is only suitable to follow this route if you are already acclimatized. You will achieve this by spending the first three days of this trek itinerary climbing nearby Mount Meru (4,556m), before then ascending the Umbwe Route to arrive at Barranco Camp.

From Barranco Camp, you then join the southern circuit and follow the Barafu Route to reach the summit via Stella Point. The Meru ascent and Umbwe route to Baranco is an itinerary we have followed on our Kilimanjaro - Western Breach for nearly three decades, with great success. While the Umbwe Route is a non-technical climb, it does offer steep ascents and requires trekkers to scramble over rocks and tree roots at specific points. It is the most challenging and direct route up the mountain, featuring several exposed ridges that are not for the faint of heart. The fitness and stamina of hikers may be tested along the way, and it is best for experienced mountain trekkers who are looking for a challenge.

FAQs

Umbwe Route FAQs

This part covers the most common questions people have concerning Climbing Routes On Kilimanjaro. Our FAQs give you clear information on everything from the length and complexity of the routes to how to acclimatize and what the view is like. This will help you pick the best way for your trip and reach the top with confidence.

The Umbwe Route is the most challenging route on Mt Kilimanjaro that approaches from the south. It is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach. It is a short, steep, and direct climb. The route features a relatively fast ascent to high altitude, which does not provide sufficient stages for acclimatization. Traffic is very low on this route; hence, the chances of success are also low. An excellent fitness level is recommended.

The length of the Umbwe Route is approximately 53 km (32 miles). You’ll need 5 days to trek the Umbwe Route. At BestDay Safaris, you’ll need 6 to 7 days to hike Mount Kilimanjaro via the Umbwe Route.

The Umbwe Route is one of the shortest routes, and it has poor acclimatization due to its steepness and the days spent on the mountain. There are no official statistics; the average success rate across all operators is 70%.

The Umbwe Route starts amid tree plantations and rainforests and then goes up a steep hill to Crater Camp near Furtwangler Glacier. Hikers may check out Reusch Crater, a beautiful, round ash hole that few people get to witness.

The Best time to climb Kilimanjaro is from July to September. You’re less likely to encounter rain during this period, and the weather is likely more stable. Since Kilimanjaro is close to the equator, it is possible to climb the mountain at any time of the year. Avoid April and May, as it is more likely to rain during this time.
