The Umbwe Route is rarely climbed and provides a straightforward route up the southern aspect of Africa's highest mountain. Due to the topography and the faster rate at which altitude is gained, it is only suitable to follow this route if you are already acclimatized. You will achieve this by spending the first three days of this trek itinerary climbing nearby Mount Meru (4,556m), before then ascending the Umbwe Route to arrive at Barranco Camp.
From Barranco Camp, you then join the southern circuit and follow the Barafu Route to reach the summit via Stella Point. The Meru ascent and Umbwe route to Baranco is an itinerary we have followed on our Kilimanjaro - Western Breach for nearly three decades, with great success. While the Umbwe Route is a non-technical climb, it does offer steep ascents and requires trekkers to scramble over rocks and tree roots at specific points. It is the most challenging and direct route up the mountain, featuring several exposed ridges that are not for the faint of heart. The fitness and stamina of hikers may be tested along the way, and it is best for experienced mountain trekkers who are looking for a challenge.
The Umbwe Route map shows the direct and demanding path toward the summit. It highlights the steep ridges, forest entry, and sharp elevation gains. This guide prepares climbers to picture the challenging yet scenic ascent carved along Kilimanjaro’s toughest trail.
